The World’s Fastest Car: 1,000 mph in 40 seconds

The Bloodhound is a newly designed car being built in Britain.  It will be constructed to travel far in excess of the speed of sound.  The time trial is scheduled for 2011 in South Africa.

There are two very exciting and unique aspects to the Bloodhound project, both important to math students everywhere:

  • First, every aspect of the car’s design and performance are being simulated in advance using an array of powerful supercomputers.  This approach is a sea change over the traditional drawing board and wind-tunnel testing procedures.
  • Second, and an extremely important part of the Bloodhound experience, 25,000 schools in Britain are using the project as an inter-disciplinary learning opportunity for students combining mathematics, science and engineering.
