Disappointing Math Report Card: Nationally and in California

There is still a lot of work to do to increase our students’ skills and enthusiasm about mathematics and algebra. On October 15th, both the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle reported on a test of math skills for fourth and eighth graders. The test is the National Assessment of Educational Progress, given to 329,000 fourth- and eighth-grade students.

Nationally, the momentum for gains in math achievement has slowed and is at a plateau overall and in specific demographic groups.

In California, math scores rank near the bottom of all states, with the exception of Mississippi and Alabama.
